Reflecting on the Year
Written by Emily McDonough
Man, what a year! From August to April, we hosted a diverse range of events that fostered both personal and professional growth, as well as expanded in size with the addition of women who are just as passionate and dedicated as the club’s founders. On the professional side, we worked with Northwestern Mutual, Kellogg, 84.51, Luxottica, and many more well-known companies to provide our members with opportunities to expand their networks and enhance their resumes. From company visits to panel events, the representatives from each of the companies offered very useful insight into how they have the positions that they have today. Then, on March 25th, 2017, months and months of hard work and planning came to fruition, and we hosted our first annual LWiB Empowerment Day. We spent a Saturday meeting new people from different walks of life and listening to a variety of successful women and their experiences in the workplace. We have already started working on next year’s Empowerment Day! Our presence in Cincinnati’s professional community has strengthened over the past nine months, and the members that are graduating are going into the workplace as strong negotiators, presenters, and multitaskers.
In Lindner Women in Business, we focus on further developing the whole self, which is why we also had meetings that focused on empowering our members to be great friends, students, girlfriends, and daughters. Together, we have built an intimate community of powerful women who support and challenge one another. There were many Wednesdays where we all sat in the basement of the local 86 Coffee Bar and shared stories, laughed, learned, and made new friends. The diverse personalities, opinions, and backgrounds that filled the basement created the best conversations and encouraged genuine self-expression. We are a collection of high-achieving, authentic women without the drama.
So, looking back, we have had quite the school year and absolutely cannot wait until the 2017-18 one. Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year - from all of our #GIRLBOSSES in the workplace who took the time to speak to us to UC faculty to each of our dedicated members. And, thank you to the graduating LWiB women who have been with the organization since their first or second years. It is sad to see you all leave but we know that you are going to represent us well wherever you go! Have a great summer my fellow LWiBer’s - can’t wait to see your beautiful faces in the fall!
